House on Sturgeon Lake.

Our clients, an active family with two young sons, wanted to leave the city and build a house in a more natural setting. Their search led them to a steeply sloped property on the southern shore of Sturgeon Lake in central Ontario, where dramatic views came with the challenge of building into the hillside.

The house responds by settling into the slope rather than sitting on top of it. From the road, it appears low and modest, partially embedded in the landscape. Toward the lake, it opens up to reveal its full two-storey height, with each room oriented to the water and the changing light beyond.

The plan is organized as two intersecting volumes. A long, slender wing runs parallel to the shoreline, containing the living spaces and bedrooms so that each room has a view of the lake. A second wing extends back into the hill, anchoring the house to the site and forming a sheltered entry courtyard protected from the prevailing winds.

This secondary wing contains the garage, laundry, and storage areas. The house is entered at the upper level, which is also the main level. Below, additional bedrooms and a family room open directly at grade towards the lake, taking advantage of the natural slope.

At the meeting point of the two wings, large glass openings frame a view through the house to the water beyond. The entry is set obliquely beside this opening, creating a quieter moment of arrival before returning to the view of the lake. From the lake, the house projects a more monumental presence, its full height gathered under a bold chevron-shaped roof composed of two broad mono-pitched planes.

The directness of the roof takes inspiration from the utilitarian agricultural sheds found throughout the surrounding farmland. Deep overhangs protect the house from the weather, while conventional wood framing and readily available materials helped keep construction costs manageable. The exterior is clad primarily in pre-finished black wood siding, with clear-finished western red cedar used to mark more tactile moments, including the entry areas.
